Monday was the first day at the beach and the girls got already new friends as two Golden Retrievers found their way to our cabin!
Before the first surf session, Ashlee and Aino showed the different parts of the surf board and the kids learned a number of new words such as nose, tail, stringer, fin, leash, leash loop...
Our new English & Surf friend Susanna from Finland got a short demonstration of the basics one needs to know before going in the water. Mari showed how to handle the board!
After surf it was time to study English and fill in the surf passes.
Life guards work at the beach. Their job is to look after people who go swimming between the blue flags which is the designated swimming area.
In the afternoon Mari, Helmi and Susanna went through the different stretches and body parts. Stretching exercises are good for your body.
On Tuesday 10th July the morning started with different kinds of swimming activities. Guy and Claire showed and taught children various swimming strokes that were then tested in the pool. Although the weather was rather chilly the children enjoyed their time in the pool!

On Tuesday night we went to watch films at the Anglet International Surf Film Festival.
The place was crowded as many people had arrived to Chambre D'Amour to see the latest surf films.

Happy man! During his two week stay, Theo progressed a great deal in surfing and was able to move from soft boards to shorter hard boards. Go Theo, hunt those tubes!
On Thursday the group Sharks challenged their fellow campers from Pignada to play a beach volley match. Before the game the opponents shook hands to show the spirit of fair play!
The match against the boys and girls from Reunion Island was tight and even. After three exiting rounds, despite the brave attitude and devoted playing from our part, the Reunion kids beat us! Congratulations!
After a long and hot day of surfing, Jeanne enjoyed her delicious water melon with a big smile!
On Friday morning we drove to Biarritz where the kids surfed perfect smooth waves at the famous Grand Plage just in front of the Casino.
Our friend Hakim!
As one group was surfing we took the other ones to watch the Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012 which is a female surf contest held annually at the Cote de Basque.
Boys enjoying the hot day and professional female surfing!
To our pleasant surprise, environmental issues were clearly present at the Roxy Pro competition. For instance, Surfrider Foundation Europe (http://www.surfrider.eu/) had a display which included a variety of waste dumped into the sea and the time these different types of waste take before they vanish from the sea. Cigarette lighters, for instance, take 100 years to vanish whereas glass bottles can take up to 4000 years! Shocking.
While we were waiting for the heats to start, the competition area offered a number of different activities for its visitors to entertain themselves. With the girls we went to try sewing! Everyone of us got to sew a nice picture on a white simple top, here is the masterpiece by Susanna!
One of the pro surfers doing a round house- turn!
Speaking of reusing! One child was placing a collection of toys in the sand, made of bits and pieces of plastic and wood and other types of waste!
Use your imagination!
Something to think about.
